The Towns Alive Award

A Ceredigion County Council project has been chosen as the Business and Economy Category Winner in the Wales Zone region of the Towns Alive 2013 Awards. The Aberystwyth Market Hall project was developed in partnership with the Aberystwyth Market Hall traders, the Ceredigion Rural Development Plan Local Action Group - Cynnal y Cardi - the Aberystwyth Regeneration Area partnership and Ceredigion County Council.

This project has seen the total internal refurbishment of the 150 year old Market Hall in Aberystwyth, which reopened in June 2013. Working in partnership with the traders since 2011, the project has included the provision of business mentoring services and also the introduction of four new incubator units to aid new business start-ups in the town. The Market Hall is maintained and managed on a day to day basis by Ceredigion County Council.

Councillor Gareth Lloyd, Ceredigion County Council Cabinet Member for Economic and Community Development, said: "This project is part of a wider regeneration strategy for Aberystwyth developed and agreed by a local partnership, which wants to see the town centre becoming an attractive, accessible and vibrant place for business and customers; this project demonstrates our commitment to that goal as do other proposals for redevelopment and Town Improvement Grant schemes in the town centre."

A spokesperson for the Market Hall Traders Association said "We would like to thank the Council for working with us on this project. We would also like to thank them for relocating us in a prime town centre location where we can trade from and spread the news about the renovation of the Market Hall."

Carl Sargeant AM, Welsh Government Minister for Housing and Regeneration said,

"I would like to congratulate Ceredigion County Council on this success. I was fortunate to be in Aberystwyth recently to officially open the market hall and saw at first hand how the old hall has been given a new lease of life with support from the Welsh Government Regeneration Fund. This accolade is a further boost to support the regeneration of Aberystwyth as a key strategic location in mid Wales. Well done to all those involved!"

The Towns Alive Awards were founded by Action for Market Towns in 2004 to recognise and showcase initiatives that are helping small market towns to adapt to change and flourish. Zone winners, winners of the Trailblazer Town Award and the Overall Towns Alive National Award winner will all be announced at the AMT National Convention in October 2013.
